Experience
I taught all grade levels of middle and high school in English, History, Government, Economics, Psychology and Creative Writing. Students range from in-class to online activities for inside and outside of the classroom. I created curriculum and caried out lessons for all my students. I even ran a chess club. I have been doing private tutoring for 10 years outside of my classroom experience.
Teaching Methodology
Through my educational positions I have become aware of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. I have taught and advised an array of students in a variety of settings, teaching both day and evening classes, online and hybrid (synchronous and asynchronous), and during the summer and winter as well.
To keep students enthused and engaged in the subject matter, I incorporate a lot of student-centered learning activities in addition to lecture. I have students break up into discussion groups to focus on primary documents assigned for the week, or to develop group answers to questions and topics posed in class. These group discussions not only force students to interact with various opinions and perspectives, but they also help to build a collaborative environment that helps students gain a deeper understanding of the topics outlined in class. Through this process, students are challenged to act as historians through analyzing primary source documents. In addition, issues and topics in current events are often discussed to help reveal the significance of the historical topics that we are covering in class. Furthermore, the collaboration with different students in these group settings helps to foster an environment of open dialogue that not only keeps the student’s interests, but also helps to expand the student’s understanding of diversity and cultural interaction. Every student deserves a chance to do well and I aim to do just that.
