Experience
I have experience tutoring students from elementary school through the college level, with a particular focus on middle school and high school mathematics. I am comfortable supporting students in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, Geometry, and the Integrated Math I, II, and III curriculum taught throughout Irvine schools. I help students strengthen foundational skills, understand challenging concepts, and develop the problem-solving strategies needed to succeed on homework, quizzes, and exams.
My teaching experience began through peer-tutoring programs in middle and high school. During college, I also served as a course tutor for Data Structure Implementation and Analysis. Today, I work full time as a software engineer and use my strong mathematical and analytical background to break complex material into clear, manageable steps. My goal is to help each student become more confident, capable, and independent in mathematics.
Teaching Methodology
I do not believe that any student is inherently “bad” at math. When a subject feels difficult or intimidating, students often need the right explanation, consistent encouragement, and a learning approach that works for them. Today’s students manage demanding courses, busy schedules, and considerable academic pressure, so I strive to be both a tutor and a mentor; someone who helps them understand the material while guiding them toward greater confidence and independence.
I have always genuinely enjoyed learning. In high school, I participated in Quiz Bowl, Academic Decathlon, and Mathletes, which strengthened my enthusiasm for mathematics, critical thinking, and academic competition. I bring that same positive energy to my lessons and hope to help students view challenging math courses as opportunities to grow rather than obstacles they cannot overcome.
Why Choose Jay?
I understand firsthand what it feels like to be a student in a demanding, high-expectation academic environment. I once considered myself a slow learner, which taught me that students often need additional time, a different explanation, or simply the confidence to keep trying.
Because of that experience, I approach every student with patience and empathy. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions without being rushed or judged, while receiving the clear guidance and encouragement they need to make meaningful progress.

Other Interests
Outside of tutoring and software engineering, I enjoy trivia and learning about new subjects. After a recent trip to Shanghai, I became especially interested in Chinese history and have been watching videos and documentaries to learn more about it.
I also enjoy hiking and exploring California; my biggest purchase this summer was a California Explorer Annual Pass. I am an avid movie fan and have recently been working my way through Christopher Nolan’s films. I am also a devoted Sacramento Kings fan.
