Experience
I began tutoring creative writing and English lanuage arts in 2022 after relocating to Southern California from Brooklyn to be closer to my family. I've worked extensively with middle and high school students in the Irvine area, helping them with everything from reading comprehension to last-minute essay edits and more intimidating work like college essays.
Over the past three years, my students have won three YoungArts awards in creative nonfiction, one High Commendation in the John Locke Global Essay contest, and multiple Gold Scholastic Writing awards. I've helped students write winning UC essays to UCLA and Berkeley, while others have attended top 30 schools like Cornell, Columbia, Stanford, CMU, RISD, NYU, and more.
Teaching Methodology
My teaching methodology is supportive yet practical. I think students learn best when they feel like their tutor is listening to them and adjusting to their needs. I begin each class with a brief check-in - how is your energy level? How is school going? so that I can gauge how much to push the student versus how much to support them.
Then, I try my best to break assignments down into manageable steps. Students sometimes feel shy to admit when they don't understand something, but this ultimately slows them down. I am very understanding when students don't get something at first - practice makes perfect! I try to balance lecturing with hands-on practice. For example, I encourage students to explain concepts back to me, or I will have them practice with different exercises, worksheets, and practice sets.
Admissions coaching entails a different process of honing in on a student's general vision, their academic goals, etc. I have a lot of experience helping students craft the "perfect" essay, or the one they feel confident sending off to their dream school.
Why Choose Julia?
My personal background as the daughter of a Korean immigrant and American military officer means that I am very understanding of different cultural backgrounds and experiences. Growing up, I moved around frequently, and school was my anchor. I hope to share my love of learning with students so that the classroom feels empowering, not intimidating.
I'm not only a tutor, but I try to serve as a supportive mentor. I take my work with students very seriously, and I am very attentive to their academic and personal needs. I want to help students succeed at their homework and scary projects, but mostly, I want to help them grow and believe in themselves so they can take on any challenges that come their way.
