Experience
I have several years of experience teaching and supporting students through my work as a swim instructor, California Junior Lifeguard instructor, and Biology Club president. In the summers of 2019, 2020, and 2021, I taught children swimming and ocean safety skills, adapting my instruction to different ages and abilities. During college, I served as president of the Sonoma State University Biology Club, where we regularly organized study sessions and helped students develop effective study and test-taking strategies.
I specialize in biology and science-related subjects, and I am especially passionate about helping students understand challenging concepts and build confidence in their abilities. I graduated with distinction in 2025 with a degree in Biology. My experience working with students, including students with different learning needs, has taught me the importance of patience, flexibility, and making learning approachable and engaging. I hope to inspire students to develop both stronger academic skills and a genuine interest in science.
Teaching Methodology
My teaching philosophy is centered around making learning fun, engaging, and meaningful to each student. When a student is struggling with a difficult concept, I try to break it down into smaller, more approachable pieces and connect it to real-world examples or topics that interest them. I also encourage students to ask questions and make mistakes without feeling embarrassed, because I believe that curiosity and experimentation are important parts of learning.
I recognize that every student learns differently, so I adapt my approach based on their needs. Some students may benefit from visual explanations and diagrams, while others may learn best through discussion, practice problems, or hands-on examples. My goal is not simply to help students get through an assignment or prepare for a test, but to help them understand the material well enough that they feel confident in their own abilities. Most importantly, I want students to leave our sessions feeling that learning can be enjoyable rather than something they simply have to get through.
Why Choose Skylar?
What sets me apart as a tutor is my ability to connect with students and create a comfortable, supportive environment where they can learn without feeling pressured or judged. Throughout my experience working with children and young adults, I have consistently received positive feedback from parents about my patience, communication, and ability to work well with their children. I genuinely enjoy getting to know my students and finding ways to make difficult material more interesting and approachable.
With a degree in Biology and experience teaching children in both educational and recreational settings, I bring both subject knowledge and hands-on experience working with different types of learners. My goal is to help each student reach their individual goals while also building their confidence and interest in learning. I believe students learn best when they feel understood, supported, and genuinely engaged with the material.
