Boarding School Admissions Consulting
For parents or students looking for highly individualized education, with an emphasis on personal development and improving skills, boarding schools may be your answer. While the typical image of a boarding school involves students being separated from family for the majority of the year, this is certainly not always the case. Boarding schools vary in their logistics, so it is worth researching any that are accessible to you. Their smaller populations lead to more individualized attention and a communal bond among students and teachers. But with smaller class sizes and specialized curricula come highly competitive admissions. The application process may be far more complex than you or your student is familiar with, and simply learning about schools is daunting in itself. Working with a professional admissions consultant from TutorNerds, however, can make the entire process easier. Our consultants can help you learn about your options and build your strongest application.
Boarding School Applications
Obviously, requirements will vary from school to school, but these basic components will be consistent. There are three means by which boarding schools get their applications. The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) is an application portal used by many schools to simplify the application process; the Secondary School Application Test (SSAT) offers a similar service called the Standard Application Online (SAO). In both cases, students fill out one primary application to be forwarded to any school. Finally, some schools use their own application service. Each overall application should not vary by much, so this will give you a good idea about what to expect.
The main application documents will ask for basic personal and academic information. Past academic performance has a huge impact on boarding school admissions. Boarding schools with a strong reputation intend to maintain such prestige, and are certainly seeking students whose grades meet their reputation. In addition, students with special interests, skills, and talents will generally have greater admissions potential. Essentially, the caliber of the student must meet or exceed that of the school. Standards vary between schools, so it is important to work with a consultant who is familiar with local schools.
Applications generally include a couple personal essay prompts. In these essays, your student will need to think critically about his or her life, goals, and/or influences. These topics may be totally foreign to young students. A high-quality consultant can help your student bring out his or her own unique ideas and experiences, and then organize them into a coherent essay.
Interviews and/or Observations
Interviews are much like college interviews. Schools need to assess how the student responds to critical questions, what his or her overall dynamic is like. If a student is applying to any kind of specialized school (for performing arts, for example), there is an audition-type component to the process as well. Parents may or may not be present, depending on the school. This makes preparation especially important. Much like the essays, students have probably never experienced a formal interview before. While appropriate etiquette and sophisticated responses are a must, it is important not to force students to simply memorize answers. They should feel totally comfortable acting naturally in an interview. While they are being assessed, students should also be seeking additional information about the school. If your student is particularly interested in athletics, or studies music, or hopes to be a doctor, he or she should inquire further about such topics. TutorNerds admissions consultants can help students understand the significance of an interview, and prepare for any question.
K-8 entrance exams serve as a way to standardize all applicants. Class difficulties vary, meaning comparing students according to grades and academic performance is not so accurate. Like the SAT and ACT for college, these exams allow admissions officers to compare students on an even ground. There are several commercially available exams used by schools, such as the ISEE, HSPT, and SSAT, though some schools make their own. Preparation is of paramount importance here because there is only one opportunity to take an entrance exam–consider TutorNerds Test Prep.
